This post is may be a waste of your reading time, then again it may answer ALL of your life’s questions. And if you read that sentence and kept reading, thank you. I bow to you. 😛
What profound lessons can I impart about oatmeal?
Oatmeal makes me think of cold mornings, filling up with warmth. When my kids eat it I feel happy and fulfilled that they have nourished themselves and have loaded up with goodness to get them through their day. It is “stick to your ribs” food.
One might say you can tell a lot about a person by how they take their oatmeal. I worked with a girl in Chicago who liked her oatmeal soupy and extra watery. I was baffled; it made no sense to me! I like mine with all the water absorbed but not too lumpy. It has to be perfectly textured: smooth but maintaining enough texture for a good chew. Maybe she is more “go with the flow” or maybe I like more substance. Fascinating stuff, right?
I recently signed up to be a BzzAgent. This was during one of my pre-blog burnout moods a couple of weeks ago. I was exploring ways to expand my blog and venture into different territory. Then as soon as my box of Quaker Warm & Crunchy Granola arrived in the mail, I instantly felt guilty about it all. I’m not sure product reviews are my dig. I sometimes read product reviews from other bloggers and have actually found some cool stuff, particularly the labels Meredith of Perfection Pending reviewed, and I ended up ordering some myself. Maybe this will open your eyes to a new breakfast food that you and your kids will love and your morning will start off blissfully happy because your kids will love it and eat it quickly before happily skipping off to school. A nice dream, right?
Here are the facts: It was super easy to sign up to be a BzzAgent. After you sign up, you do a bunch of surveys so that they know what you like. Then you wait until they email you with a campaign to participate in. I got the oatmeal email and said “heck yeah! I like oatmeal!” The package arrived a couple of weeks later with a box of the Warm & Crunchy Granola and some coupons. Thanks Quaker and BzzzAgent!! You rock!
The granola/oatmeal (granoatmeal?) was good! It was easy to make. Just pour in a bowl, add milk and microwave it. It took a while for the milk to absorb but that was not a deal breaker. My son loved it, and the texture (once the milk absorbed) was great so he could feed himself. Bonus points! I took a bite of his after he took three bites and was “all done” and I liked it; it has good bite.
I felt all warm and fuzzy that he filled up on the good stuff and being a hippy, granola-loving girl deep down, I loved it too. This stuff would be awesome mixed into ice cream. After working for Baskin Robbins in high school, I have great ice cream flavor ideas swirling in my head and they all include granola. I may have to make some granola chunked ice cream this summer.
There you go, Quaker Warm & Crunchy Granola was some good shiz. You should try it!
*After writing this, I learned that writing it had no bearing on any BzzAgent credit and didn’t up my chances for getting better, cooler stuff to review. So, this review and post is because I didn’t have enough time this weekend to write something awesome-er. Hope you don’t feel like you lost minutes on your life. lol!
I don’t (feel like I lost minutes on my life, that is). Because I really REALLY love oats, so much so that I read until the very end. I might have even been a horse in a past life. But that’s a whole separate matter.
oooh, I would like to know more about your horsey past! I’m totally into past life regression. Wonder what lessons your horse self is here to learn. Maybe Quaker Warm and Crunchy will help! 😉
He is so cute!
If you decide reviewing products isn’t your thing, you can always just decline when BzzAgent invites you to a campaign. 🙂 I’ve declined two or three since signing up because they didn’t appeal to me.
I know. I’m not sure yet. I like oatmeal so I was for it but doing all the promoting was a little strange. First timer thing probably
I felt strange with my first campaign too but I really like how BzzAgent works, so I feel more like I’m promoting them, and not as much about me promoting the actual products. 😉 Haha, this is probably NOT what they want to hear!
I don’t care much for random reviews and giveaways on blogs (that seem out of place), but I’m all for relevant content.
I agree. Seems like a great company. I struggled with feeling like the review wasn’t relevant at all…hence all the sarcasm 😉 but I’ll keep an open mind and be choosey about future campaigns. You always do great reviews!
was also my attempt at a silly post 😉
Well, I read all of the way though and didn’t feel as though I lost out on my life, so Yay! You did a great post, even if it didn’t count! 🙂
I know how you feel about the promotion and stuff… I’ve done a few House Party items and I hate the tweets and posts and such!
Yeah, it just doesn’t feel right. Its not like Quaker really needs my help afterall.
From one oatmeal lover to another, u made me want to try it!!!! And that precious boy is a perfect model!!!! 😄

oh good! it is tasty. yes, if the writing doesn’t make you want to try, his sweet lil face is the hook! (by then again, his Nana is sure to think so):)
I like oatmeal, I love you, and I think you’re better than bzzAgent. Your writing inspires, Ms. Winding Road. If oatmeal is your muse, then you will write an inspiring piece with oatmeal at it’s center. If oatmeal is your center, then you will write a blog about oatmeal.
Why thank you!! I don’t think oatmeal is my muse. No offense, oatmeal. But, I do like to try new things. Some things stick, others don’t. This whole product review experience didn’t “stick to my ribs”.thanks for reading anyway! Something super awesome is on the way. haha!
I have no doubt. I’ve been waiting for you to respond, I was hoping you wouldn’t take offense. I just think you’re better than blogercials. No, I know you are, and I wouldn’t feel okay if you didn’t know it.
And something super awesome is on the way. It always is for you.
I have some writers block right now too. I think it comes from having hit a deer (with my car, not like, slapped it in the face) and being stuck in the house. Nothing interesting ever comes from watching a Law and Order marathon.
No offense taken! Are you kidding, I am flattered 😉 Sorry you hit a deer! Are you ok? Other than being brainwashed by Law & Order?
I am so uneducated when it comes to this whole product promotion blogging thing. Is there significant upside in it for you? I guess I haven’t figured out what so many seem to be doing it these days. There must be some payoff, right?
I think the payoff is just free stuff and coupons. But that isn’t that a big of a payoff for me I don’t think. If some company started giving me yoga pants, mats, oil diffusers, etc. it’d be fun. Or Pinot Noir, I’d be happy to review that 😉
No kidding! 🙂
Maybe based on my blog content I’d get fitness gear (or wine!). I’ll investigate. 🙂
Kerry, there are so many campaigns for fitness/yoga/health related blogs. Here’s one that I know: http://fitfluential.com/ambassadors/
cool, thanks Jhanis!
How do you get wine? I’d totally review wine, immediately after I’d finished the bottle.
me too!! now those are some product reviews that would be worth reading. haha!
The same feeling when I did my first review! LOL I didn’t want to sound cheesy but it came out cheesy still hahahaha! Now, I make it a point to apply for campaigns that I feel I would enjoy and help readers find new cool stuff, easier for me to write. 🙂 And this was not a waste of time! We love Quakers but have not heard of Quaker Warm & Crunchy Granola so we’re gonna check if this is available in our local market. 🙂
nice! Glad you will try it! It was good but not something I would have “written home about” ordinarily 😉
You made me want oatmeal! And to do product reviews. I’ve never even thought about it before. I’ll check it out. Oh and your son is ADORABLE!
He is pretty darn cute 😉 Great! I’m happy you found this helpful in some way!
I know what you mean about the review thing. I’ve always wavered myself. I think you did a great job!
Thanks Rachael. It was a lame attempt. I hope my sarcasm didn’t offend people who love doing product reviews. To each his own, right 🙂
Exactly! I didn’t find you offensive at all 🙂
Tee hee hee! Let’s hear it for Oatmeal! We actually had some this morning for breakfast. We love it around here!
Lol! Your comment gave me the giggles. Yay oatmeal!
Like you, I prefer my oatmeal thick with all the liquid absorbed. I make my mine with vanilla soy milk – delicious!
yum, sounds good! Almond milk would be tasty too.
You did a grand job, Kerry, from beginning to end. I know what you mean though about reviews. It’s the way I’ve always felt about the idea of selling something. I can’t imagine being able to do it unless it was for something I really loved like stationery or books or wine! I know I would be awful attempting to sell something I didn’t ‘believe’ in. I’d talk myself out of sales. At least with product reviews you’re getting to choose what you already like, if I’m picking up on this correctly.
And I love porridge. Plain oats, a bit of salt, water, boiled then simmered till almost dry. Then let it ‘set’ for a minute. Pour cold milk over it. Delish! And it’s such a great filler for hours. I’ve tried a few of the flavoured varieties but I still prefer it plain. No sugar. That would be what we’d call the ‘sassenach’ way. 🙂 x
